The Halo Effect — Summer Clean Up 2026

At Atmosphera, our mission is to help people and the planet flourish. We do this by creating climate-curated skincare that builds resilience, respects nature, and empowers every person to find their element.

This summer, we're bringing that mission into our communities through The Halo Effect, a nationwide clean-up initiative led by our Affiliates.

Why? Because no matter where you are, you likely know a place or two that could benefit from litter removal. Trash belongs in the landfill, not loose in the environment where it mars the landscape and creates safety issues ranging from toxic leaching to choking wildlife. So let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!

Our Goal

Collective Target

10,000+

pounds of trash collected from the environment

June & July 2026

Together, we aim to collect more than 10,000 pounds of trash from the environment throughout the months of June and July 2026.

Each Affiliate has the flexibility to organize a cleanup that's right for you and your community. The size, location, outreach, and structure of your event are up to you.

To support you, we've compiled a list of state and local resources to help guide your clean up. You're welcome to use these resources, and/or find your own.

“Atmosphera will ‘walk the walk’ on our environmental commitments when we show up as our Inner Halo community this summer, creating a positive impact on the spaces we share, and inspiring a true halo effect.”

Trash Collection

There are two types of collection you can do in this clean up: Trash (stuff that goes to the landfill or incinerator) and Recycling (only select materials that are widely recyclable, which will go to a Material Recovery Facility or sorting station).

Ideally, Halo Effect cleanup crews will sort recycling from trash and bring them to the designated drop-off locations in your region. If that's not possible in your area, that's OK — sending it all to proper trash collection is still better than leaving it in the environment.

Recycling

Only collect the following EMPTY packaging:

  • Plastic water bottles (LDPE / HDPE — e.g. Poland Spring)
  • Aluminum cans (e.g. Coke, Coors)
  • Glass bottles (soda, iced tea, wine)

These items are widely accepted at recycling facilities. If you're unsure whether an item can be recycled, place it in the trash bags instead — better to recycle only what you're confident is recyclable.

Best practices

  • Empty 30-gallon bags before dropping items into a recycling bin — bagged recyclables are often not processed.
  • The bags themselves are not recyclable.
  • Check with your local recycling facility for their specific guidelines.

Trash

Examples of litter that goes to the trash:

  • Plastic bags
  • Coffee cups
  • Take-out containers
  • Straws
  • Floss picks
  • Cigarette butts
  • Any packaging that isn't an LDPE/HDPE bottle, glass, or can

Needles & glass — handle with care

Needles and glass should not be put in trash bags. Use solid containers like buckets or trays to prevent injuries to volunteers and waste sanitation workers.

Note on sharps

It's up to your discretion whether you pick up glass and needles. For needles, you may contact local organizations to properly dispose of them — or dispose of them yourself. Please be careful.

Data Collection

A data tracker is provided in the Back Office Resources under The Halo Effect. We'll collect basic information on your clean up, as well as how many 30-gallon trash bags were filled. If you choose to sort and recycle, you'll also have the option to record bags of approved recycled material.

After your cleanup, complete the Google Form and upload a photo of your completed data tracker. Your results will be compiled alongside every other Affiliate's data so we can measure our collective impact.

Disposal

Well in advance of your clean up date, check with your local municipality and/or waste management companies to learn what goes where in your area, and how/when you can drop off materials. Call ahead to make a plan — you don't want to be turned away with recycling and trash bags!

Landfill or Incinerator

Your local waste management facility accepts non-hazardous, municipal solid waste. Call for information on days/times for dumping and any local restrictions.

Hazardous waste

Any discarded material that causes environmental or human health threats because of reactivity, toxicity, or corrosiveness — batteries, aerosol cans, electronics, paint cans containing liquid paint, etc. Hazardous waste typically has special drop-off locations and days.

Material Recovery Facility (MRF) or Recycling Centers

  • Plastic water bottles (LDPE, MDPE, or HDPE)
  • Aluminum cans (drinking or food)
  • Glass bottles (iced tea, soda, beer, wine — not Pyrex or reusable glass)
